I am getting married tomorrow. TOMORROW! While I’m beyond excited, I’m taking some time to type up a post on a gift I gave to my mom. As far as Love Languages go, “Gift Giving,” isn’t one of mine. Perhaps, it is because I was blessed to have grown up in a family that had everything they needed, but I just don’t understand gifting for the sake of gifting. If you’re flying into the Texas airport and feel bad that you haven’t gotten me, your hostess, a present, please don’t pick me up a $15 garden gnome that says “Gig ‘Em” just so you can check that box. Something I LOVE is a thoughtful present crafted specifically for the recipient. They make me feel special and connected, and I do my best to do that for others when I give a gift.
So, really, what do you get your parents for a wedding present? Anything I could buy them, they could buy for themselves and more. There are picture frames, and jewelry, and socks, and cufflinks, but come on. Kind of lame. My only options then become the thoughtful gift. I follow an incredibly talented artist on Instagram, Little Patterns, and she’d recently started painting leather jackets. She does beyond beautiful work, and it inspired me to make one for my mom.
I got an awesome, upcycled, genuine leather jacket and was off to the races. Here are some process shots the project. I’ll post an update once I have a picture of her wearing it on the wedding day!
